Breathe in the spirit of Christmas in Scandinavia! This week will let you dive into old and modern Nordic Christmas traditions. It includes a candle manufacturing course and a visit at the famous Christmas market in the UNESCO protected city of Røros. You have the opportunity to buy traditional crafts for every time at the year and also personalized items.
Join our Christmas crafting and bakery courses of ”lussekatter”, ginger bread and decorate your own ginger bread house. Learn new tasty artisanal recipes for all year round and get the taste of the ”smörgåsbord”, also called the “julbord” (Christmas table), the traditional Swedish Christmas dinner. Enjoy your stay at the festively decorated surroundings at the hotel where we will introduce you to the Swedish Lucia tradition and Christmas carols, in case you haven’t heard about them before.
Everything you take home with you will be packed in individually designed printed wooden boxes which are easy to bring with you as hand luggage or in your check-in luggage.
The famous yearly crafting market of Røros once got introduced by a Swedish king in 1854 and still has a vital and strong traditional meaning for all the people living in this area.
Stroll along the tiny streets of Røros with its colourful traditional wooden facades that invite you in to the many charming little boutiques and backyards where all kinds of traditional and artisanal Scandinavian and Sami crafts are getting presented. Enjoy tasty delicacies and treat yourself with a Norwegian or Swedish sweater, a reindeer or sheep skin or a Sami knife… the Røros market in February is the ultimate event for everyone interested in Scandinavian cultures, crafts, music and traditional dances.
Included is a tour with a traditional horse sled through the city in the evening, when sparkling torches light up the winter night in the most magical way. You will also visit an old traditional house at the main street of Røros.
And how about a reindeer safari? Come and discover Sami culture as you meet the reindeer owners in the area.
We also invite you to learn how to prepare some of the local dishes, such as the «Smörgåsbord» and to try out regional arts and crafts.
Your will stay at the wonderful Skarvruet Highland Hotel with its vintage wilderness ambience. During the evenings of your culture adventure week, you are welcome to warm up in the panorama sauna or the hot tubs and enjoy three-course dinners at the restaurant. One dinner will take place in a traditional house from the late 17th century at the main street of Røros.
