CULTURE
& CRAFTING

Discover 3 Scandinavian cultures at once:
the Sami, the Swedish and the Norwegian people welcome you to the southernmost part of Lapland!

Though you may come to think, that you have left modern civilization far behind, our region is actually filled with multiple vivid cultures! Within one week you will get the chance to experience not only the unique culture of the people living along the border between Sweden and Norway, but also the region of the UNESCO protected Røros as well as the Sami culture. You will also be able to try and participate in artisanal food production, the cooking traditions of the region and to discover genuine natural food from the wilderness around us.
We offer 3 different kinds of culture week packages during autumn, Christmas time and winter.

1 | Enjoy cultural adventures in autumn in southern Lapland

Come and meet the Sami and their reindeers and experience both their old and modern traditions. Take a ride on a horse back or a carriage tour in the environment of the UNESCO protected copper mining city of Røros.

Experience historical adventures in the museums and theatres and enjoy the unique architecture of this region. Participate in the special historic play called “The Fire”, showcasing the old days when the Carolines were in the area. You will stay over one night in a house in Røros and get the genuine feeling of the old times.

Explore the many handcrafting boutiques in Røros as well as back across the border in Sweden. Handmade food and bread is available at many stores and there are some experiments waiting for you to craft souvenirs to bring back home.

2 | Experience traditionally Scandinavian Christmas in the highlands

Breathe in the spirit of Christmas in Scandinavia! This week will let you dive into old and modern Nordic Christmas traditions. It includes a candle manufacturing course and a visit at the famous Christmas market in the UNESCO protected city of Røros. You have the opportunity to buy traditional crafts for every time at the year and also personalized items.

Join our Christmas crafting and bakery courses of ”lussekatter”, ginger bread and decorate your own ginger bread house. Learn new tasty artisanal recipes for all year round and get the taste of the ”smörgåsbord”, also called the “julbord” (Christmas table), the traditional Swedish Christmas dinner. Enjoy your stay at the festively decorated surroundings at the hotel where we will introduce you to the Swedish Lucia tradition and Christmas carols, in case you haven’t heard about them before.

Everything you take home with you will be packed in individually designed printed wooden boxes which are easy to bring with you as hand luggage or in your check-in luggage.

3 | Explore the Crafting Market of Røros & much more in February

The famous yearly crafting market of Røros once got introduced by a Swedish king in 1854 and still has a vital and strong traditional meaning for all the people living in this area.

Stroll along the tiny streets of Røros with its colourful traditional wooden facades that invite you in to the many charming little boutiques and backyards where all kinds of traditional and artisanal Scandinavian and Sami crafts are getting presented. Enjoy tasty delicacies and treat yourself with a Norwegian or Swedish sweater, a reindeer or sheep skin or a Sami knife… the Røros market in February is the ultimate event for everyone interested in Scandinavian cultures, crafts, music and traditional dances.
Included is a tour with a traditional horse sled through the city in the evening, when sparkling torches light up the winter night in the most magical way. You will also visit an old traditional house at the main street of Røros.

And how about a reindeer safari? Come and discover Sami culture as you meet the reindeer owners in the area.

We also invite you to learn how to prepare some of the local dishes, such as the «Smörgåsbord» and to try out regional arts and crafts.
